The SLR heart: V8!
The SLR unit is known with the Mercedes-Benz internal identifier M 155
The V8 gasoline engine – like the entire drive train of the SLR – was designed and built by Mercedes-AMG. Even though the supposedly same engine from the SL 55 AMG seems to be known, the supercharged unit was only reserved for the various variants of the SLR during its construction period from 2004-2009.
Technically and geometrically, the M 155 was based on the engine from the SL 55 AMG. With a displacement of 5439 cm3, the V8 engine delivers 460 kW / 626 hp at 6500 rpm. The torque is 780 Nm and is available in a wide window from 3250 to 5000 rpm.
With the two 722 variants and the SLR Stirling Moss, the nominal power was increased by 24 hp and the maximum torque by 40 Nm.
The SLR engine has proven to be very reliable and robust over the years.Currently, not a single engine damage is known to the super sports car. The regular maintenance of our very frugal unit includes the annual engine oil change and the replacement of the spark plugs as part of the regular service cycle.
Warming up the engine oil when starting the SLR should also be routine. Give the engine time to warm up! When the two drops disappear from the display, the motor and fluids are at operating temperature.
If you are still out with the SLR in autumn, you should look under the bumper. Leaves can accumulate in the intake tract to the main cooler and have the consequence that the performance of the cooler is impaired in exceptional cases.
